“If two guitar players play in the same way, at least one of them is doing it the wrong way”

A typical statement from Pieter van der Staak, who founded the festival in 1969. Since then, the festival took place every year without any exception so far.
In those days The guitar in Holland was not a prestigious instrument, like the “classic” instruments, such as strings and the piano. The possibilities for guitar students to play before an audience were limited. Pieter van der Staak, professor at the conservatory in Zwolle, felt he had to offer his students more than just the lessons at the conservatory, and started the festival. In the beginning the festival was three weeks long!!

Nowadays the festival is 5 days (October/November) of masterclasses, lectures, concerts, (own) productions, ensemble weekend for amateur players, a fair and a competition.
